Chess Club Championships
Anthony T. defeated Skyler M. for the 2010 Chess Club Championship this week. Skyler returns as the #1 ranked player next year with 20 teammates. Our strongest alumni yet!
Mount Holiday Chess Tourney
Cherry Street Chess Club in coordination with the Grand Traverse Academy Chess Club hosted it's Inaugural Mount Holiday Chess Tournament on Saturday, May 8th at the Mount Holiday Resort east of Traverse City. The tournament was attended by 26 players from both schools. This is an unranked 5 round Swiss Style event with each player playing 5 rounds with the top 4 players receiving trophies. The children really enjoyed the competition as well as meeting some new friends. In the end Skyler earned the 4th place trophy and Anthony claimed the Grand Champion Honor. Congrats to our Knightmares from the North for another wonderful show of Blazer Pride!
Ludington Optimist Chess Tourney
The 55th Annual Ludington Youth Chess Tourney bills itself as the oldest amateur event in Michigan. Although it was Kalkaska Chess' first time attending we garnered awards as well as some new respect. We took 11 players in grades 4-11 to Ludington, competing in the Elementary and High School Divisions. Additionally, we met a new team from the Grand Traverse Academy that I am sure we will be contacting for future matches. Logan F. finished 4th in the Elementary Division and Skyler M. finished 7th in his very first competitive chess event. Congrats Knightmares!
2010 Michigan State Elementary Chess Championships
Although we have had much better success at the State Elementary Chess Tourney, I have never been part of a team that played with as much spirit and heart as our children did this year. My hat is off to a great group of students that played their hearts out despite being matched against the toughest competition we have ever faced. Jacob K. did finish with a 3-2 record and Micah L. finished with a 2-2-1 record. The Knightmares from the North finished 40th out of 47 teams this year, but our alternate, Logan F. got some valuable game experience that will serve him well as he undoubtedly assumes the lead position heading back into East Lansing in 2011.
